Who Can Fill Joe Kyrillos' Shoes?

News that state Sen. Joe Kyrillos was calling it quits on his nearly three-decade-long career as a beloved state lawmaker sent shock waves through Monmouth County.

Many questioned who could replace the legislator from Middletown lauded by members of both political parties as a “friend,” an “absolute gentleman,” a “mentor” and a man who defined “the right way to be a public servant.”

Their short answer: no one.

“I wish there were more Joe Kyrilloses and today there’s one less,” Middletown Committeeman Anthony Fiore said. “I hope he’s not done. I think the world of him.”

In practical terms, there will be another Legislative District 13 state senator who takes the office once Kyrillos wraps up his term in December 2017. Local politicos bandied about names of potential replacements Wednesday almost as vociferously as they heaped accolades on Kyrillos.

And there was much praise for him.

“For nearly three decades, Joe has been a tireless champion for Monmouth families,” Monmouth County Republican Chairman Shaun Golden said in a prepared statement.

“Joe’s tenacity and work ethic have been virtually unmatched in our party and state.  His unwavering commitment to job creation, economic growth and shore protection have helped build and maintain a high quality of life for Monmouth County families, seniors and veterans.  We wish Joe much happiness and success in his future endeavors.”
